vanessa's sewing style

I’ve always loved sewing since the age of 15. I’ve dabbled in many types of sewing–from home décor to fashion. I enjoy playing with patterns and textures, as well as mixing various color combos. Fabric manipulation and mixed media arts are where I create some unique pieces to embellish my products. All fabric has unique qualities that change its look. Recycling and Upcycling fabric allow me to explore these qualities using a variety of special sewing & design techniques with embroidery, threadwork, bobbinwork, beading on fabric, and applying these techniques with beautiful sparkly and variegated threads.

Small bags filled with personal products for The First Period Project

Years ago, I belonged to a sewing group that held charity sewing events. I volunteered to sew pillowcase storage bags for the homeless. This event changed my life…

I’ve always had a calling to serve in my community and had explored volunteering in various ways. But none of them affected me the way using my sewing skills did. From there, I organized charity sewing events, which included sewing pillowcases for hospitalized children and dresses for girls in Africa.

Many years have passed since I volunteered. But living through a Pandemic changed everything. It was an unbelievably scary time knowing countless people were infected or had died. When learning the medical community was running out of masks, various groups emerged to sew them for local areas.

Driven by fear and anxiety of the unknown, I needed to put my emotional energy somewhere. I spent six months sewing and coordinating with other volunteers to pick up and deliver supplies and masks. My volunteer work didn’t end after the masks.

I joined Crafting Change, a sewing activism group who provide sewn, knitted, and crocheted items to organizations serving the needs of their communities. It’s easy to volunteer from my home where I can set aside time to sew the requested items. I will post more about this group and the items I’m sewing on my blog, so be sure to check it out. If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about Crafting Change, I encourage you to visit their website or their Facebook page.
